Our Farm

What is Hydroponics      How We Grow      What We Grow

Derived from two Greek words - “hydro” (water) and “ponos” (labor), hydroponics is the science of growing plants in non-soil media to which nutrient enriched water is added.

Hydroponic growing is not new.  Examples of early hydroponic culture date back more than 2,600 years with the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Egyptian hieroglyphic records from several hundred years B.C. describe the growing of plants in water. The Aztecs of Mexico created floating gardens in the 11th century.  Although research on plant nutrition and physiology dates back thousands of years, technology of the 20th century dramatically improved the productive capacity of hydroponic growing.

Benefits of our hydroponic farm include:

  • Year round growth in a controlled environment.
  • Computerized control systems allow for more efficient use of energy.
  • Vine ripened fruits and vegetables taste better and are healthier than those that have been artificially ripened by being picked green and gassed for shipping quality.
  • Lower water consumption.  Hydroponics actually uses much less water than conventional field farming.
  • Environmentally-friendly disease and insect control.
  • Crops can be grown on smaller parcels of land and in areas that are marginal for food production.
